Move an Agent Builder agent to Copilot Studio when you outgrow it
Task · Agent Builder: upgrade
Time saved · 1-2 hrs per agent (estimate, not measured)
⚠️ Licensing: copying needs a Copilot Studio license or a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, plus the Dataverse entitlement in your Microsoft 365 license. A trial lets you test but not publish beyond personal use.
Steps
- Use this when you need actions, connectors, workflows, more channels or analytics. Agent Builder can't call external services
- Open the agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot, select More options (…) and choose Copy to Copilot Studio, then pick an environment
- Save the new agent in Copilot Studio. Name, description, instructions, suggested prompts, icon, SharePoint and website knowledge come across
- Re-add what doesn't copy: upload embedded files again, add the Outlook or Teams connectors for email and chat knowledge, and turn on code interpreter in settings
- Test, publish, and tell the people you shared the original with where the new one lives. The original keeps working until you delete it
Prompt / template
Checklist prompt (paste into any AI chat before you copy): Here is my Agent Builder agent's setup: [paste name, description, instructions, knowledge list]. I'm moving it to Copilot Studio to add [action, e.g. create tickets / send to Teams]. List: what will copy over, what I need to rebuild (embedded files, email or Teams knowledge, code interpreter), the tool or agent flow I'll need for the new action with its inputs, and 5 test questions to confirm the copy behaves like the original.
